Balkan Cake

A film deals with philosophical questions of visual art. In the opening scene, we see an exhibition hall after the opening has ended, when the guests have already left and only a messy table remains behind. The only person left is the guard, who falls asleep slumped over the table, and his brain falls into a container. The film evokes his dream.

The paintings slide down from the walls and merge into the container, where the brain is also located. Here, the motifs of the images blend together and begin to take on a life of their own. Various symbolic scenes unfold. An artist enters the room and attempts to smear this chaotic mass—these intermingling painterly motifs and figures—onto the wall, condensing them into a final state of art: Malevich’s Black Square.

In the end, the artist leaves, and only the sound of the door closing is heard in the darkness, as the space of the dream shuts itself away.

Balkan Cake appeared at festivals and exhibitions between 2007 and 2008, including the Kecskemét Animation Film Festival, Belgrade (Balkanima), Mostar (NAFF), as well as in Târgu Mureș and Zsámbék.
